If you have ever slept in a sailboat, at least older ones, the cushions are not very comfortable. Jeremy and I both love our sleep, so after spending the night on the boat, we realized we needed to invest in something better. There are boat mattresses for sale, but they are way pricier than we were thinking. So instead, we thought we’d get creative.
First, we bought this memory foam mattress. The longest width on our bed is the size of a king mattress, so we got this King 8″ mattress.
After we received the mattress, we brought the original mats from the boat to our apartment. We sat the mattress out for two days so that it could fully rise before we cut it. Once it was ready, we laid the mats on top and traced so that we knew the exact measurements of the boat bed that we needed to fill.
We tried at first to use a hand saw, but that wasn’t working well so we bought this Oster elective bread knife that actually worked great!
We cut the mattress and then wanted to be sure that the bottom of the mattress had the same water proof material to prevent condensation from building up underneath the mat.
This Mattress Cover fit perfectly, the we adjusted it to fit the V-berth shape that we need. It is not the plastic bed bug wraps you may remember from your college dorm. It’s a polyester type material that does not make noise! We brought it to the boat and it’s a perfect fit!
Next project: sheets and bedding to make it feel homey, but not get wet in the boat life humidity! We are three weeks away from this being home!
